Muscle Building Peptides
Peptides have been used by bodybuilders for years to achieve muscle gains and promote physical enhancement! True, bodybuilders have also been known to using steroids. It is important therefore to understand the distinction between peptides and steroids.
IGF-1 LR3 is the primary protein involved in responses of cells to growth hormone (GH): that is, IGF-I is produced in response to GH and then induces cellular activities. One such example is muscle growth or hyperplasia. This compound also makes the human body more sensitive to insulin. It is the most potent growth factor found in the human body. IGF-1 causes muscle cell hyperplasia, which is an actual splitting and forming of new muscle cells.
IGF1 LR3 is also known as Long R3 IGF-1 or Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I Long Arg3. This is a human recombinant, single, non-glycosylated, polypeptide chain containing 83 amino acids and having a molecular mass of 9200 Daltons. IGF1 mediates many of the growth-promoting effects of growth hormone (GH; MIM 139250).
Follistatin is fascinating protein that can increase muscle mass beyond natural potential by suppressing myostatin. Scientists first identified follistatin while examining porcine (re: pig) follicular fluid in the ovaries.
Myostatin (GDF-8) is a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily that is highly expressed in skeletal muscle, and myostatin loss-of-function leads to doubling of skeletal muscle mass. It is now known that myostatin is a key regulator of mesenchymal stem cell proliferation and differentiation, and mice lacking the myostatin gene show decreased body fat and a generalized increase in bone density and strength.
Follistatin works by binding to and inhibiting transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) peptides such as myostatin which is responsible for regulating and limiting muscle growth. It’s also worth pointing out that myostatin may have a regulatory role in skeletal muscle fibrosis; too much myostatin can impair tissue function and cause chronic disease in vital organs, tissues, and bone marrow.
ACE-031 is an investigational (experimental) drug that is designed to increase muscle size and strength by blocking proteins that slow down muscle growth. ACE-031 is a protein drug that is administered by subcutaneous injection.
Even though in bodybuilding circles we don’t hear much about Sermorelin, this doesn’t mean that this peptide does not have its uses. In fact, anti-aging and hormone replacement clinics have been prescribing it for years because it works as a clean GHRH. The problem for the bodybuilder or athlete is that it has a very short half-life of about ten (10) minutes.
HGH Frag 176-191 is a fragment of the HGH peptide. Scientists found that if they truncated the peptide at the C terminal region they could isolate the fat loss attributes associated with HGH. Taking this fragment from HGH, including the peptide bonds from 176-191, they found they had developed a peptide that regulated fat loss 12.5 times better than regular HGH.
This becomes an unattractive feature when compared to the half-life of MOD GRF (1-29) (CJC 1295 without DAC), which comes in around 30 minutes. Despite its short window, it does bind quite effectively to the pituitary receptors. The other main down side associated with its very short half life is that it is quickly broken down by blood enzymes within minutes. This is why a GHRH peptide with a half life of 30 minutes or longer is desirable, since it will survive the blood enzyme death and allow it to circulate the body looking for hormone receptors to bind to.
