Exemestane (Aromasin)

An oral steroidal aromatase inhibitor that is used in ER-positive breast cancer in addition to surgery and/or radiation in post-menopausal women. Is a drug used in the treatment of breast cancer in women who have gone throughmenopause. It may be used in women for whom adjuvant tamoxifen therapy is not working or in women with advanced breast cancer that is not responding to treatment. This drug is available by prescription only and women must be supervised by a doctor while they take it. It is sold under the brand name Aromasin® And some pharmacies may require advance notice to stock it because it is not a frequently used medication in some areas. Many breast cancers are characterized by being estrogen receptor positive, needing estrogen to grow larger. Medications like exemestane reduce the amount of estrogen in the body, cutting off the supply to the cancer and preventing the tumors from growing larger. This particular medication is an aromatase inhibitor. It blocks the action of the enzyme aromatase, preventing it from converting androgens in the body into estrogen. Taken in tablet form once a day. Patients can experience side effects like nausea, anxiety, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, bone pain, and chest pain. Side effects vary widely between patients and patients should report the side effects they experience to their doctors, as some may be indicators of dangerous complications. Shortness of breath and chest pain in particular are causes for concern in patients taking exemestane.

An oral steroidal aromatase inhibitor that is used in ER-positive breast cancer in addition to surgery and/or radiation in post-menopausal women.

Application:

Exemestane is part of a general group of drugs called aromatase inhibitors. Normally in the body, some of the androgens (male hormones) that are made by the adrenal glands are converted to estrogen by an enzyme in fat tissue called aromatase. This drug blocks aromatase so that estrogen isn’t formed that way. This lowers estrogen levels in women who do not have functioning ovaries. This drug doesn’t affect estrogen production from the ovaries, so has little effect on estrogen levels in women whose ovaries are working. If estrogen levels are lowered, breast cancers that require estrogen to grow may stop growing or even shrink.

Developed to help fight breast cancer, Aromasin is one of the most powerful estrogen suppressing compounds available for body builders taking anabolic steroids. Additionally, it also raises testosterone in the body, which is a bonus for bodybuilders during post-cycle-therapy.
Aromasin (Exemestane) is one of those weird compounds that nobody really knows what to do with. It’s a third generation Aromatase Inhibitor (AI) just like Arimidex (Anastrozole) and Femera (Letrozole).

Benefits of Exemestane:

1. Exemestane lowers estrogen levels in postmenopausal women, which may slow the growth of certain types of breast tumors that need estrogen to grow in the body.
2. Exemestane is used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is often given to women whose cancer has progressed even after surgery, radiation, or other cancer medications have been tried without success.
3. Exemestane may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of exemestane:

In bodybuilding and steroid use, side effects with aromasin are rare when taken at an appropriate dosage. Some guys will complain of joint pain from dryness, so when that occurs the dosage should be brought down. Sides among females are much more common because, even though the dosages are similar, the female body will react differently to an AI than a male will. In addition, females will take this drug for a longer period of time when compared to a steroid user. Bottom line is the side effects of not taking an AI for a male on cycle is much more of a risk.

Exemestane dosage:
1. Usual Adult Dose for Breast Cancer:
For early and advanced breast cancer:
Recommended dose: 25 mg orally once daily after a meal.
2. In postmenopausal women with early breast cancer who have been treated with two to three years of tamoxifen, treatment with exemestane should continue in the absence of recurrence or contralateral breast cancer until completion of five years of adjuvant endocrine therapy.
3. For patients with advanced breast cancer, treatment with exemestane should continue until tumor progression is evident.
